Recreating Editorials

In today’s lesson we were trying something different in that Branka gave all of us editorial picture at random and we had to recreate the look using items we had in our kit. I was given a copy of The made features of the look were dark smokey eyes, a strong brow and red lips. A similar look to what we had done a couple weeks ago. For infomation on health and safety - please refer to Health and Safety post.
I first started with foundation – and soon found out this was a mistake. For foundation I choose to use MAC’s Face and Body mixed with a small amount of Urban Decay’s Naked Foundation. I done this because I find the Naked Foundation has a slightly thicker consistency and is more yellow toned. For concealer I used Full Coverage under the eyes and anywhere else I felt needed spot concealing. Now realising that my choice to do foundation first was a mistake, I put a thick layer of powder under the eye to hopefully catch the fallout from the black shadow.
For the eyeshadow I first put MAC’s gel liner, Blacktrack, over the eyelid and then blended it out and patted Ben Nye’s Black eyeshadow on the lid. I then blended out the black shadow with a warm brown in the crease. I then finished the eyeshadow but putting a light cream on the brow bone and inner corner. I then dusted off the excess powder from under the eye and found that some of the black fallout had still managed to cling to the foundation. As a result I had to remove all the makeup from under the eyes and then re-apply.
For the brows I choose to try out a new product which could be considered an inexpensive dupe for Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow pomade which is the Brow pomade from Freedom at Superdrug which can be picked up for £5 and fraction of the £15 price for Anastasia Beverly Hills. I really liked this product and I felt the colour worked really
well on my model as the colour was a grey-brown and not too red. It is easy to use and I found it didn’t dry too quickly so I was able to manipulate the product to my liking. I traced round the brows slightly with a small amount of concealer to neaten up the brows.
I next moved onto the lips and I used Cherry lip pencil to completely fill in the lips, next I used Ruby Woo to fill in the lips. When compared to the photo I was trying to recreate the lips weren’t dark enough and looking back on it I could have mixed the red with a small amount of purple to make it a deeper red.
To finish the look I used MAC’s Soft and Gentle on the tops of the cheeks and a bronzer to strongly contour my model’s cheekbones.
Overall, I was really happy with what I created. With the added pressure of a strict time limit I felt I quicken my pace without compromising my level of work. Although I made a few silly mistakes like the foundation – I was able to quickly and effectively fix my mistakes. One of my biggest achievements was the fact I was able to finish the completed look without skipping elements or rushing. When compared to the look I had previously created a few weeks back I feel that today’s look was more successful.
