Why I picked i-D?

I chose to go with i-D which is a British magazine dedicated to fashion, music, art and most importantly youth culture. Having done my research of a few magazines I was torn between either Dazed and Confused or i-D. Both magazines were similar in their unique takes on fashion and their front covers. I decided to go with i-D in the end as I liked how the model's covered one of their eyes. As I state below this look is integral to i-D's identity and makes the cover easily recognisable.

Key features?

- Encourages creativity

- Alternative

- The wink and smile on each front cover is a graphic representation of the magazine's logo. This is integral to i-D's identity

- Contemporary culture

Networking?

To find my model and photographer, I put out a casting out on a couple Facebook groups that I am apart of which are especially for Models, MUAs, Photographers and Stylists ect.

Having looked at their portfolios I felt that my model Fede and photographer Sabela were the best fit for the shoot.

Here are some of the model's portfolio photos which I really loved:

We organised to do the shoot at Ravensbourne University and hired out the uni studio. We had the studio for 4 hours so we were able to do a couple different looks.

SS15 Hair?

For the hair, I was first inspired by the hair Guido Palau created for the Marc by Marc Jacobs fashion show. It was inspired by bantu knots and these all formed a faux Mohawk with a spiky fringe. I loved this look as it was quite punk and experimental yet playful.

I also wanted to add an element of crimping as seen on the Stella McCartney catwalk where a few random pieces were crimped.

I was further inspired by the mini bun hairstyle used at the Ground Zer Show which was part of Paris Fashion Week SS15.

I decided to do two different looks for the hair. One with space buns and another with the hair simply down with pieces of the hair crimped and a few random braids.

To create the look I braided my model's hair tightly and used a straightener over the braids. I then hairsprayed them and let them cool to create crimps.

SS15 Makeup?

For the makeup I was inspired by the Saint Laurent show. The eyes were the focal point and were dark with a graphic liner.

I also really liked the makeup for the Pucci show where the eyeliner was the focal point again.

I knew I wanted to compliment the eyeliner with a brown smokey eye - similar to models walking for Tommy Hilfiger Women.

Makeup focal points?

- Mac full coverage used for foundation for a flawless base

- Strong brows using Freedom's brow pomade

- Brown smokey eyes with a smudged 'lived in' liner using Ben Nye Eyeshadow palette with Marc Jacobs liner and Mac Backtrack

- Lots of mascara

- Bright pink/purple lips - Mac lipstick palette

- Strong contour and plenty of blush - I wanted the contour and blush to be quite strong as I knew the lights were going to be very bright in the studio as we were using coloured gels and I didn't want the makeup to be washed out

The overall experience?

I really enjoyed this assessment as it gave us an element of creative freedom as we were able to organise the whole shoot ourselves. This meant I was able to design the set, lighting, makeup, hair and even styling of the clothes. I was really happy with how my cover came out and it was even better then I first imagined. If there was anything I could change, it would have been the colour of the lips as I would have wanted to use more of a nude brown as I felt it would have complimented the eye look far better then the purple pink lips. I now have some great new contacts who I look forward to working with again in the near future so I'd call the shoot a great success! :)
