FORMATIVE EVAL

Today was the day that it had all been leading up to. It was our formative assessment for fashion current trends and for this we had to recreate the hair and makeup done for a fashion show. We had four to choose from: Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, Tanya Taylor and Burberry and I done research on all of these and they can be found on further down on my blog. For my chosen show I decided to go with Zac Posen SS15.

For the hair, my brief was a deep side part with slicked back sides with a slight push-wave. To recreate this look I first straighten my model’s hair. I only done this quickly at I didn’t want the hair bone straight. Next I used my pointed tail comb to create a deep side part and began to use gel to slick back the sides. I manipulated the hair so there was a slight wave on one of the sides and I used a hairdryer on a low setting to help set the gel so there wasn’t a need for many pins. The rest of the hair – mid-lengths to ends looked like wet in the pictures so I lightly spritzed the hair with water and added a small amount of mousse to give the hair texture. However, in doing so my model’s hair regained a lot of its natural curl. As a result, her hair practically went back to its normal state so straightening the hair was pointless.

Overall, I liked how the style came out, however it wasn’t an exact replica of the hairstyling for the Zac Posen hair. I feel this was because we didn’t have a chance to practice the previous week and as a result I was almost making it up as I went along. This in turn caused mistakes such as reversing my model’s hair into its natural state. I also felt timing was an issue and towards the end I was rush and as a result I wasn’t able to put finishing touches to the hair which would have improved the overall look. Despite my setbacks there were some elements to the hairstyle that I really did like such as the slight S-shaped wave that I managed to get into the hair using gel. If I was to do this look again I would have adapted the look and used something like a crimper to add texture to the hair instead of going for that shiny wet look.

For my makeup look I have already made a detailed post on what used to create the shiny lids and matte lips of the Zac Posen show. As I really liked how my practise run went I strictly stuck to what I had done the previous week and wanted to take on-board any mistakes or improvements what I could rectify and improve on this week. Please feel free to check out the blog post where you can see all products used at: http://gabriellejames.wix.com/blog#!WORKSHOP-Preparation-for-Formal-Assessment/cmbz/56660d450cf2a72d69b74622

Something that I noticed the previous week was that there was quite a lot of fallout under the eyes since I was using a pigment and as a result this clung to my model’s foundation. To combat this I choose to do eyes first and then clean up the fallout and move onto the base. I really liked how the eyes came out and once again I used the same combination of products on the eyes: No7 Skin Illuminator topped with Mac’s English Gilt pigment and a small amount of Vaseline on the inner lid. I feel my choice in products was really successful and left the high shine I was going for.

For my model’s foundation I mixed what I thought was a suitable colour for her skin but at the end when I saw her in a different light I felt I may have just gone ever so slightly too dark. For the base this would be my only complains and the rest (contour, blush, highlighter) was fine.

Something that I really struggled with during my practise run was the lips. The previous week I felt my hands were quite shaky with the MAC Cherry lip liner and as a result I could get that sharp edge that so evident on the Posen runway. However, I changed up my positing on my hand this week and lightly rested my hand on a powderpuff and on my model’s face to steady my hand and I felt this really helped. I got a much smoother line, still not perfect, but it was a definite improvement from last week. Something that I also noticed during my practise week’s photographs was that the red lip was coming across as more of a pink and to combat this I tried to mix up a colour that was more on the true red side.

Overall, I am really happy with how my makeup look came out and I think with was down to having the previous week to practise. I was able to see what did and didn’t work and as a result I was able to adapt accordingly. Things that I felt were successful were the eyes and to a certain degree the lips. I was a lot faster at do the lips this time round and I think this was because I was more confident in what I was doing. Something that I would like to practise on is foundation matching. I feel during the previous week this wasn’t an issue but this week it just needed to be a touch lighter as I went too warm.

With my first term drawing to an end I wanted to take the time and reflect on my current trends unit. I feel that my complete makeup look was certainly a high to go out on and I feel that my skills have continually improved with every week and I look forward to more that comes.

Merry Christmas!
